The Past Tense Verb (I)

In lesson 1 you learnt that a verb is a word that denotes a state or an action in a particular tense (past, present or future). In the Arabic language, a verb in the past tense is called (الفعل الماضي) such as in the following example: ضَرَب - he struck

The past tense has 14 different forms. In this lesson you will become familiar with the first three forms of the past tense and how to construct them. Verb forms, (مُذَکَّر غائب) These are known as the 3rd person masculine wherein the doer is absent from the conversation and is being talked about

وَ قَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّـهِ
(and they said)

Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful. (68:41)

قُلْ صَدَقَ اللَّـهُ ۗ فَاتَّبِعُوا مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

Say: Allah has said the truth, therefore follow the religion of Ibrahim, the upright one; and he was not one of the polytheists.(3:95)

and : وَ

وَ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا

And We created you in pairs.(78:8)

praise = حَمْد

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا

Then celebrate the praise of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness; surely He is oft-returning (to mercy).(110:3)

فَ‍‍صَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ

So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].(108:2)

at the time, when = إِذَا

إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّـهِ وَالْفَتْحُ

When there comes the help of Allah and the victory.(110:1)

الْحَمْدُ لِ‍‍لَّـهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.

Allah = اَللَّه

أَلَيْسَ اللَّـهُ بِأَحْكَمِ الْحَاكِمِينَ

Is not Allah the best of the Judges?(95:8)

فَجَعَلْنَاهُ فِي قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ

Then We placed it in a secure resting-place.(77:21)

مَثَلُ الَّذِينَ حُمِّلُوا التَّوْرَاةَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَحْمِلُوهَا كَمَثَلِ الْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَارًا ۚ بِئْسَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّـهِ ۚ وَاللَّـهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.(62:5)

ship = فُلْكِ

وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى الْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ

The And upon them and on ships you are carried.(23:22)

he = هُوَ

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّـهُ أَحَدٌ

Say: He, Allah, is One.(112:1)

those = أُولَـٰئِكَ

أُولَـٰئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَ أُولَـٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ

Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.(2:5)

the one = اَلَّذی

الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ

The one who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind.(114:5)

those who = الَّذِينَ

الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

Those who believe in the unseen and keep up prayer and spend out of what We have given them.(2:3)

sun : شَمْسَ

وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا

And made the moon therein a light, and made the sun a lamp?(71:16)

They disbelieved = كَفَرُوا

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ

And (as to) those who disbelieve, in and reject My communications, they are the inmates of the fire, in it they shall abide.(2:39)

brightness = ضِیاء

هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ ۚ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّـهُ ذَٰلِكَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۚ يُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ

He it is Who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light, and ordained for it mansions that you might know the computation of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create it but with truth; He makes the signs manifest for a people who know. (10:5)

peace = سَلام

سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ

Peace it is till the break of the morning (97 : 5)
