Iqra: The Eternal Tradition of Quranic Education at DarulQuran Academy

Teaching Quran recitation has been important since the dawn of Islam. Through a brief exploration of the early days of Islam, we find that “Iqra” (recitation) is the most important axis in Quranic education.

The first aspect of this method is that the teacher recites, and the Quran learner absorbs the words through active listening, attempting to mimic the pronunciation and recitation style of the teacher.

The second aspect is that the Quran learner presents what they have learned to the teacher, and the teacher’s approval and confirmation are the third stage. This method was used by the Prophet (S) throughout his blessed life to teach the holy Quran to his companions, based on recitation, presentation, approval, and confirmation.

Moreover, the basis of divine Quranic education is “Iqra”. The interpretation and expression of its quality and method exist in verse 18 of Surah Al-Qiyamah, which states: “So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.” The method of learning the Quran by the Prophet (S) was to listen to the divine verses and repeat them to be memorized in his blessed heart.

Thus, in the context of Quranic education, the Prophet (S) followed the divine models of teaching the word of Allah step by step, and he taught the descended Quran to his companions in the same manner as the Quran was revealed.

The correspondence between divine and prophetic Quranic education is considerable. Allah Almighty says to the Prophet (S): “We will make you recite [O Muhammad], so you shall not forget.” This is exactly reflected in the Prophet’s teaching method, as he also chose the method of reciting the verses for teaching the Quran.

The Prophet insisted that everyone should use the same method of reciting the verses in teaching the Quran, and he often said, “The best among you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it to others.” Alongside this, in explaining the method of learning and teaching the Quran, he said, “The best among you is the one who recites the Quran and teaches (recites) its verses to others.”

In numerous books and narrations, there are many indications that the method of Quranic education in the Prophet’s method was reciting the divine verses and teaching them orally.
One of them is a narration from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, who said: “I presented to the Prophet seventy surahs of the holy Quran, which I had heard and learned from the Prophet, and recited them again.” Abu Shamah al-Maqdisi says: “The companions of the Messenger of Allah used to recite the verses in the same way that the Prophet recited for them.”

Sakhawi, in explaining a corner of the Quranic education culture, says: “Quran teachers in the early days of Islam would recite Quranic verses to learners following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (S) so that they would hear and repeat them, and thus learn the Quran.

Just as the Prophet Muhammad (S) himself recited the book of Allah to people as commanded, and it was exactly in this way that Gabriel would present the Quran to him.”

Therefore, the tradition of “Iqra” is one of the traditions that has been prevalent from the dawn of Islam until now.

The importance and effects that reciting the Quran has for the reciter by the teacher and the reciter are not hidden from the experts in this field; mastery in pronouncing Quranic words, focusing on meaning in recitation, complete recitation of the Quran, improving the quality of recitation, coordination with the Islamic world in Quranic education, permission issues, and more are among the effects of this educational method.
