The paper looks at the circumstances under which believers can obtain help from Allah in line with the Holy Quran then uses perspectives from traditional as well as modern Tafseer. We will also look at how these conditions can be applied to present-day situations. and how believers can seek to align themselves with divine principles to receive this aid.
Understanding Divine Aid in the Noble Quran
Allah doesn’t support everyone at random; instead, He supports only a select few based on certain criteria.
These criteria can be found throughout the Sacred Quran in many verses, which is why divine support can only be granted if a person does or feels very specific things towards Allah or themselves as individuals. This divine help shown within this book [or work] has supported its prophets or followers, showing immortal principles governing His help for them.
Conditions for Benefiting from Divine Aid
- Faith and Taqwa (Allah-consciousness)
Faith and Taqwa are two essential conditions for benefiting from divine aid, as emphasized in the Holy Quran. Faith, or belief in Allah and His teachings, is the foundation upon which a Muslim’s relationship with their Creator is built. Taqwa, on the other hand, refers to consciousness of Allah’s presence and fear of disobeying His commands. Together, these two qualities form the basis for receiving blessings and assistance from Allah.
In numerous verses of Quran, Allah emphasizes the importance of faith and Taqwa in order to receive His help and support. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186, Allah says, “And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
“This verse highlights the importance of having faith in Allah and turning to Him in times of need. By believing in Allah’s power and mercy, and by exhibiting Taqwa in our actions, we demonstrate our trust in Him and invite His assistance into our lives. This is reiterated in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 69, where Allah says, “And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.
“In this verse, Allah promises guidance and support to those who strive for Him with faith and Taqwa. By seeking to please Allah and follow His commandments, believers open themselves up to receiving His blessings and aid. This is further reinforced in Surah At-Talaq, verse 2-3, where Allah says, “And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
“These verses highlight the connection between faith, Taqwa, and divine aid. By fearing Allah and relying on Him for guidance and support, believers can rest assured that Allah will provide for them and assist them in their time of need. This assurance should strengthen our faith and encourage us to strive for righteousness and obedience to Allah’s commands. Tafsir scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that Taqwa involves avoiding what Allah has prohibited and fulfilling His commands, thus creating a shield against sin and facilitating divine assistance.
- Patience and Perseverance
Patience (sabr) is a basic concept in Islam which is enforced in the whole of Sacred Quran as an indispensable requirement for availing oneself of divine assistance. Quran makes frequent references to the significance of endurance while experiencing hardships as well as the benefits that result from exhibiting endurance.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah states, “O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (2:153). This verse underscores the connection between patience and divine assistance, indicating that those who exhibit patience are supported by Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, Allah promises, “And obey Allah and His Messenger, if you are believers. And do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (8:20-21). This verse emphasizes that patience is essential for maintaining faith and strength during challenging times.
Throughout the Holy Quran, stories of prophets such as Prophet Ayyub (Job) serve as examples of how exercising patience can lead to divine aid and blessings. Despite facing immense hardships, Prophet Ayyub remained patient and steadfast in his faith, ultimately receiving relief from his suffering through Allah’s mercy. Exegetes like Al-Tabari emphasize that patience in the face of trials and maintaining steadfastness in worship and obedience are essential for receiving Allah’s help. - Unity and Collective Effort
The Grand Quran emphasizes oneness of believers as a condition for divine help and blessings it is reiterated in holy scriptures (Roy, 1971), here we find this verse repeated many times throughout (Roy, 1987). According to Surah Al-Imran, chapter three, verse 103; “And, hold fast, all of you together, to the rope of Allah, do not get divided.” This verse also shows importance of unity among worshipers seeking Allah’s support or guidance.”
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 46, Allah states, “And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” This verse emphasizes that disputes among believers weaken their faith and diminish their ability to receive divine aid. Unity among believers is therefore essential for maintaining faith and seeking assistance from Allah.
In addition, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized the importance of unity among his followers. He said, “The example of believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” This hadith illustrates how unity among believers is crucial for supporting one another during difficult times. Tafseer scholars elucidate that internal discord and disunity weaken the community, making it less deserving of divine assistance. Unity and working collectively towards common goals attract Allah’s support.
- Sincerity in Intention and Action
An essential aspect of Islamic teaching is sincerity (Ikhlas), which is given a lot of emphasis from the Glorious Quran as a condition for receiving divine help, backdrop by the statement that suggests in multiple verses such us Therefore whatever you worship, we have understood it that you seek fake gods (Quran 37: 35). It is worth noting that according to many scholars, the notion of insincerity is often mentioned in the Qur’an along with its opposite meaning (wilāya) or close antonyms. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177, it states, “It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance out of love for Him…”Sincerity is essential for Muslims seeking divine aid because it purifies their intentions and actions, ensuring that they are solely seeking Allah’s pleasure rather than worldly gains or recognition. When an individual performs acts of worship or good deeds sincerely for the sake of Allah alone, they are more likely to receive His assistance and blessings. This sincerity also strengthens their faith and devotion to Allah. Furthermore, sincerity serves as a protection against hypocrisy and insincerity in one’s beliefs and actions. In Surah Al-Munafiqun, verse 4 states, “When you look at them [hypocrites], their bodies please you; when they speak, you listen to their words…but when they speak not unto thee aught…they say with their tongues what is not in their hearts.” This verse highlights the danger of hypocrisy and deceitfulness in religion Scholars like Al-Ghazali note that sincerity purifies actions and makes them more likely to be accepted and supported by Allah. - Righteous Deeds and Avoidance of Sin
In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 277, it is stated that those who believe and do good deeds will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. This highlights the correlation between faith, good actions, and divine assistance. It is clear that one cannot expect to receive help from Allah if they do not fulfill their obligations towards Him.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 69, it is mentioned that those who strive in Allah’s cause are guided by Him towards righteousness. This indicates that divine aid is closely linked with one’s efforts to please Allah through acts of worship and obedience. By actively seeking out opportunities to do good and avoiding sinful behavior, individuals can attract Allah’s blessings into their lives.
It is important for believers to constantly reflect on their actions and intentions in order to ensure that they are aligning themselves with the teachings of the Noble Quran. By striving for righteousness and staying away from sin, individuals can create a spiritual environment conducive to receiving divine aid and blessings. - Prayer and Supplication
Islamic faith has a foundational element called “Dua” or Prayer. In the Holy Quran, believers are reminded time and again that supplicating to Allah helps one receive His assistance. According to Quran, seeking aid from above is based on genuine prayerful requests and being humble while praying
One of the key verses in the sacred Quran that underscores the significance of prayer is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186), where Allah says, “And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.” This verse highlights the intimate relationship between believers and their Creator through prayer.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45), Allah instructs believers to seek His help through patience and prayer: “Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.” This verse emphasizes that prayer serves as a safeguard against sin and immorality by fostering a sense of piety and mindfulness towards Allah.
In addition to seeking divine aid through prayer, the Heavenly Quran also teaches believers to be patient and steadfast in their supplications. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah reminds believers to seek His help with patience and perseverance: “O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. “Exegetes like Ibn Kathir highlights that sincere supplication, coupled with faith and reliance on Allah, is a powerful tool for obtaining divine help.
Examples of Divine Aid in the Glorious Quran
- The Battle of Badr
One of the most prominent examples of divine aid is the Battle of Badr, where a small Muslim force triumphed over a much larger Quraysh army. The Sacred Quran recounts, “And already had Allah given you victory at Badr while you were few in number. Then fear Allah; perhaps you will be grateful” (Quran 3:123). This victory was attributed to the faith, patience, unity, and sincere supplication of the Muslims. - Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Israelites
The story of Prophet Musa and the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt illustrates divine aid in response to faith and perseverance. When faced with the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army, Musa was commanded by Allah to strike the sea with his staff, resulting in the miraculous parting of the waters (Quran 26:63). This event underscores the importance of trust and reliance on Allah in desperate situations. - Prophet Yusuf (Joseph)
The life of Prophet Yusuf is replete with instances of divine aid. Despite being betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and unjustly imprisoned, Yusuf remained steadfast in his faith and integrity. His ultimate rise to a position of power in Egypt and reunion with his family are seen as manifestations of Allah’s support for those who maintain faith and righteousness (Quran 12:54-56).
